Leveraging Innovation To Build Back Biodiversity Gene Drive Network
Leveraging Innovation To Build Back Biodiversity Gene Drive Network To prevent additional extinctions and revive ecosystems, we need to recognize that science can be part of the solution. if we are to effectively build back biodiversity, we must leverage innovative approaches and explore all tools at our disposal. For international day for biological diversity, we are showcasing 7 researchers and conservation experts and their perspective on how research and innovation can be “part of the plan” to build back biodiversity.
International Biodiversity Day Leveraging Innovation As Part Of The For international day for biological diversity, island conservation highlighted the importance of leveraging research and innovation to address conservation challenges, and how gene drive technologies are being explored as a tool to tackle invasive rodent populations on islands. In this perspective, we explore the integration of genome editing technologies into biodiversity conservation, and discuss the benefits and risks associated with genetic rescue via genome. On october 31st, the centre for invasive species solutions (ciss) and the university of adelaide held a briefing to introduce guests to this breakthrough in gene drive technology, provided by prof. paul thomas, university of adelaide, who led the team involved in the research. The cbd offers a potential governance framework and its focus on biodiversity conservation makes it a key actor for gene drive applications in conservation as gene drive is both designed as a solution to the global biodiversity loss, and yet also presents a risk to biodiversity (reynolds, 2020).

One of the approaches that is currently being explored is the use of gene drive technologies to tackle invasive rodent populations on islands. this approach could complement existing interventions and help tackle the issue of invasive species in a more humane, cost effective, and scalable manner. Scientists are working to harness gene drive, either repurposing naturally occurring systems or building synthetic versions – engineered gene drives – that might be used to spread engineered changes through wild populations over many generations. Researchers have long sought to harness the phenomena of gene drive to provide nature based innovative solutions to major conservation and public health issues, such as invasive alien species, malaria and other vector borne diseases.
