In the fall of 2020, i took a class on book and packaging design. for our final projects we were able to choose to complete either a book design or a packaging design. Probably my favorite class in college (so far at least) was the packaging design class i took in the fall of 2020 with laurie ralston, ed.d. As of 2025, 95% of our packaging by weight is made from paper, cardboard and other paper based materials. we are reducing single use plastic and introducing paper based bags in all our lego® sets, and are working hard to make this transition across all our factories.

Lego stressed that any new, sustainability focused packaging design undergoes "extensive" testing by lego itself and independent laboratories to confirm it's recyclable before launch. but it also stressed its intention to provide consumers with a positive experience when unpacking their toys. Smaller products packaged in containers that use less material simply makes good sense. the key to innovating its product packaging without sacrificing its familiar, beloved brand image involves offshoring to obtain reliable, high quality packaging solutions. I would be incredibly surprised to hear that lego is using plastic coated paper, since they have been very clear that their objective was to have sustainable, recyclable packaging, and they went through extensive testing to find the right materials.
