Notably, this study provides essential insights to differentiate knowledge exchange from other knowledge management terms, laying a foundational reference for future research and offering a valuable compilation of reported knowledge exchange mechanisms for practical testing.

To grow our engagement with research and with knowledge exchange (ke) activities, to create and apply our expertise to inform teaching and professional practice and in turn, to positively impact our stakeholders, the economy and our communities in the region of cumbria and beyond. The concept of knowledge exchange embodies this vision and encompasses both the systems and processes by which a two way flow of people or ideas is achieved between the research environment and non academic organisations, for mutual benefit. Our university’s mission is to be open to people, places, methods and ideas. knowledge exchange (ke) and knowledge transfer (kt) are important to this mission because it ensures our research has an impact outside of our university and invites external partners to shape our future. The success of knowledge management initiatives depends on knowledge sharing. this paper reviews qualitative and quantitative studies of individual level knowledge sharing. based on the literature review we developed a framework for understanding knowledge sharing research. Our expertise is deeply and uniquely rooted in understanding the political, social, economic, historical and cultural dynamics of africa, asia, the middle east and their diasporas, which collectively account for over three quarters of the world’s population.
