Jupiter Voyager 1
Jupiter Voyager 1 No spacecraft has gone farther than nasa's voyager 1. launched in 1977 to fly by jupiter and saturn, voyager 1 crossed into interstellar space in august 2012 and continues to collect data. Voyager 1 was built by the jet propulsion laboratory (jpl). it has a bus shaped like a decagonal (ten sided) prism. it has 16 hydrazine thrusters, three axis stabilization gyroscopes, and referencing instruments to keep the probe's radio antenna pointed toward earth.
Gtgraphics Voyager 1, robotic u.s. interplanetary probe launched in 1977 that visited jupiter and saturn and was the first spacecraft to reach interstellar space. voyager 1 swung by jupiter on march 5, 1979, and then headed for saturn, which it reached on november 12, 1980. Voyager 1 swung past jupiter in march 1979, revealing active volcanoes on the moon io, which was the first time volcanic activity had been observed anywhere beyond earth. it then reached saturn in. Voyager 1 was speeding out of the solar system — beyond neptune and about 3.7 billion miles (6 billion kilometers) from the sun — when mission managers commanded it to look back toward home for a final time. Voyager 1 launched from cape canaveral’s lc 41 on september 5, 1977, sixteen days after its twin, voyager 2, aboard a titan iiie centaur. despite the later launch date, voyager 1 flew a faster trajectory and reached jupiter first, arriving on march 5, 1979.
Voyager 1 Departs Jupiter The Planetary Society Voyager 1 was speeding out of the solar system — beyond neptune and about 3.7 billion miles (6 billion kilometers) from the sun — when mission managers commanded it to look back toward home for a final time. By april 1978, voyager 1 was "studying" the planet jupiter, taking pictures of the planet every 96 seconds to create a movie. by 1979, voyager 1 discovered a ring system around jupiter, as well as many of jupiter's moons. Voyager 1 entered the jovian system on march 5, 1979, when it made its closest approach to jupiter, coming within approximately 174,000 miles (280,000 kilometers) of the planet’s cloud tops. this encounter allowed the spacecraft to gather extensive data and images of jupiter and its moons. Use eyes on the solar system, nasa's 3d interactive visualization tool, to see where voyager 1 is at this moment. or, use the controls to see where it's going, or anywhere that it's already been since 1977, on its journey from earth, past jupiter and saturn, to interstellar space. Named voyager 1 and voyager 2, these twin craft were designed to fly past jupiter, saturn, neptune and uranus on their way out of our solar system. along their journeys, they would send data and images to earth.
