John Langdon Uteach Maker Making is about making technology work in the real world; turning ideas into prototypes, then making prototypes work better. it gives students practical confidence and hands on experience with trial and error success the key element of engineering. Making means: experiencing firsthand the possibilities, strengths and weaknesses of technology. carrying out inquiry based learning, plus tinkering and play in a learning environment. seeing the direct connection between math and art, and being able to work with both. leading the way to a new educational model which is much more suited to the modern, global world.
Australia John Langdon Best known for his ambrigrams, john langdon is an artist, an independent graphic designer, a writer, and typography professor at drexel university. He gave me a copy of john langdon’s book wordplay. this book, a copy of which i still have with me today, blew me away. here was someone who understood that this wasn’t mere visual trickery. it was art. it was philosophy made visible. john took ambigrams to the next level. My goal is to produce students with the skills to be highly successful in further schooling and in life, and to compete and thrive in an increasingly global economy. i want my students to become discerning citizens and successful technicians, engineers and managers that will help drive innovation and improvement. my uteach website my resume. Like the wireless lesson above, everyone has a nervous system, but few know how it really works. the most "maker" lesson i have done during my apprentice teaching is a project lead the way lesson on compound machines taught in the principles of engineering at westwood high school. The experimental nature of working in a maker space, of simply trying things without completely understanding how they work, is essential in constructing the kind of working set of knowledge that today’s world requires. I help coordinate the lab guides that work with parents and students at elementary and middle schools to set up after school maker labs. the kids get interested in the hands on projects, which span many interests and reinforce science and engineering concepts in many ways.
