The jazz studies area provides opportunities for students to perform in the unc jazz band, unc jazz combos, and charanga carolina. course offerings include private lessons, jazz theory, jazz improvisation i and ii, jazz history, jazz arranging, and the unc summer jazz workshop.
Unc Jazz Band The University Of North Carolina At Chapel Hill Events The junior recital must demonstrate performance skills in jazz. the senior recital must demonstrate performance and compositional skills in jazz and may not be performed until the successful completion of three semesters of mus 436. Students who wish to emphasize jazz performance while at unc should pursue the following jazz studies area courses sequentially according to the prerequisites listed below. When auditioning on campus, you will select 3 or 4 jazz standards in various styles (swing, latin etc.) to play with the jazz studies faculty. please be prepared to trade 4s, 8s, and solo over the tune form. Study with nationally recognized jazz faculty while performing in award winning ensembles. courses cover improvisation, arranging, and jazz history, preparing you for careers in performance, education, and composition.

The unc jazz band, with guests, will perform at approximately 4:30pm in moeser auditorium after the high school jazz band and combo performances and just before the afternoon award ceremony. The mm in jazz studies is open to instrumentalists and vocalists, and provides opportunities to further develop professional level skills in jazz performance, composition, and or research. In addition to meeting the admission requirements of the graduate school, the student must take the advisory examinations in music history and literature, jazz history, jazz theory, music theory and writing skills.
