Is It Worth Building A 1959 Revell Kit
An Aviation Enthusiast S Kit Collection Today we look at what it takes to upgrade 60 year old kit of a 1 48 scale duglass sbd dauntless wwii airplane. The revell 1 40 ad 6 was first issued in 1959. it is not a box scale kit. revell issued other kits in the same scale. other makes did the same, namely bandai. it had a slew of working features and many parts to go with it. i never did like all those features and so i decided to build my version w.
Revell 1959 16 960 The build process and current state of play is shown below. the hull and transom are nearly complete, apart from some further tidying up and flag painting, but the upper deck needs finishing and is only a dry fit currently. Essentially, the kit was built stock, right out of the box, with just a few, minor enhancements which are covered below. tamiya thin was used throughout for unpainted parts and ca glues for parts that had been painted. the body and chassis were both warped a fair amount. It’s a finicky old kit, but when one puts the care and craftsmanship into it that you have, it turns out pretty dang special. for all of it’s headaches, it’s a kit that i truly enjoy. This was a great kit when first released by monogram, and it is still the standard for measuring any other '59 chevy impala. it's an excellent value for money and should be a painless build.

As with all kit makers, revell has offered excellent, good and challenging kits over the decades. they've also combined with monogram and have had separate divisions in germany & the us. This review delivers an evidence based assessment of whether the revell b 25j’s value to performance ratio still makes sense in 2026—and where the kit will genuinely test your patience. I know that the 1959 kit came with glue and paints but as it looks without any metal parts and only the ratlines, no other ropes. the 1969 kit should have gotten the metal parts but not the lines and got rid of the glue and paints. This is one of amt's 'throwback' kits. these kits were boxed as they were in the late 1950s early 1960s. those boxes were such that once you got the parts out of the box, there was no way you'd ever be able to get them back in and have the box close properly.
