When considering bookbinding, we distinguish three fundamental parts: the text block or book block, boards, and cover. the text block is the set of quires or gatherings that form the volume, already in their correct order. What’s inside: the first page inside the book on both the front and back covers are known as endsheets. endsheets tend to be thicker than the pages used for the book’s text. this is meant to improve the durability of the pages. adhesive binding is also used to hold the pages on. These are the papers which are glued to the inside front and inside back covers of a bound book. high quality traditional books may feature ornate end papers, for example marbled papers (explained below).

Interior liner: in a standard softcover, this is the part you don’t see, sandwiched in between the cover material and the end page. in general, that can be anything from card stock to nothing at all. when using a leather that is more stretchy, this is needed to stabilize the leather. A clear, polyester film that is adhered to an original or photocopied book cover to produce a hard bound case. the cover is encapsulated between the clear polyester and paper backing with a heat set laminator. Cover the board with cloth or paper so that the boards can be protected and the sewn signatures can be concealed. wrap your chosen material around the book, and turn it inside over the boards’ edges.
