Improving Efficiency Across Health Programmes Who has developed a diagnostic approach to identify key inefficiencies across health programmes to detect redundancies that compromise governments’ ability to improve or sustain the delivery of priority health services. Through this course, you will learn how to unpack health programmes based on their common health system functions to understand how they interact with one another and the overall system, and where inefficiencies can be identified. There is therefore an urgent need to consolidate understanding of contemporary evidence based approaches for management bodies of public health systems to support efficiency improvement across the health systems they administrate. This chapter takes up the challenge set out in the book’s preface and offers a framework for thinking about the conceptualization and measurement of efficiency in health systems. As countries seek to expand and sustain coverage in an environment of decreasing external assistance and demands to improve efficiency, a holistic perspective that embeds health programmes within the overall health system can identify areas to improve efficiency in how resources are allocated and deployed.
