Iconoclast Herod Four years ago, herod dropped one of the heaviest albums i’d ever heard: sombre dessein. it was incomprehensibly, wildly dense. not the fastest or noisiest, but it hit in such a way to leave a massive impression on me. i still go back to it with frightening regularity. As a fan of all three bands, it is quite breathtaking. if you are looking for monstrously heavy with a brain, then herod ’s latest offering is for you; iconoclast is an absolute powerhouse of a modern metal album that seeks to challenge and excite the listener in equal measure. Formed in switzerland, the band now consisting of pierre carroz (guitar bass), bertrand pot (guitar), michael pilat (guitar vocals) and fabien vodoz (drums) released their debut album in 2014, followed in 2019 by a signing to pelagic records and a second opus, and then by iconoclast in 2023. This is a song that strongly shows the connection of herod to the kind of bands that populate the pelagic records roster, and is a excellent ending to a fascinating album.

Yet, for all the brutality on iconoclast, there is ample beauty to be admired. herod have found a way to weave in more clean vocals without losing their powerful edge and the atmospherics are more awe inspiring than we’ve heard from them prior. There are some albums that you are never quite ready to review, despite having them for multiple months. that being said, i’m also so fucking excited for the world to hear this chaotic masterpiece of modern metal in full. (on may 5th pelagic records will release a new album by the swiss “progressive sludge” band herod, and below we present dgr‘s review of this new record.).
