Olmsted Parks Conservancy Olmsted Network When frederick law olmsted was commissioned to design a park system for louisville in 1891, he was already the acknowledged father of america landscape design, famous for his work on central park in new york, the u.s. capitol grounds, and the biltmore estate grounds. Before age 43, olmsted was a sailor, farmer, writer—then he pioneered landscape architecture. starting with central park in 1858, olmsted and his firms touched nearly 6,000 landscape designs. olmsted’s ideas still shape how we design and value public space in america.
