The central argument of the book is that the hiddenness problem, construed as an argument against the existence of god, rests on unwarranted assumptions and expectations about god's love and. For many of them, the hiddenness of god puts their faith in god to the test. others, however, claim that god’s hiddeness is the basis of an argument against god’s existence. In this new collection of essays, a distinguished group of philosophers of religion explore the question of divine hiddenness in considerable detail. the issue is approached from several perspectives including jewish, christian, atheist, and agnostic.

This book is a significantly expanded and revised version of my 2017 gifford lectures at the university of st. andrews, entitled “though the darkness hide thee ”: seeking the face of the invisible god. it is a book that i have been wanting to write for a very long time. The hiddenness argument, properly understood, is its own best defence in the face of many of the points that have been raised against it. to see how, let us consider more closely what it claims. But overwhelmingly this hiddenness is true of that new life which we christian believers possess in christ – that new spiritual life which the holy spirit imparted to us when by faith we embraced the free gift of salvation given by the son of god. Faithfulness in hiddenness prepared him for public obedience. the quiet years were formative, not empty. faith in the quiet looks like consistency. prayer offered without emotional surge. scripture read without immediate insight. obedience practiced without affirmation. these acts may feel ordinary, but they form spiritual muscle.
