Overdose Prevention Resources National Harm Reduction Coalition Harm reduction is a public health approach that focuses on mitigating the harmful consequences of drug use, including infectious disease transmission and overdose, by providing care that is free of stigma and centered on the needs of people who use drugs. This page highlights current federal activities that promote harm reduction by increasing the availability and access to high quality harm reduction services, decreasing negative effects of substance use, and reducing stigma related to substance use and overdose.

Overdose Prevention Resources National Harm Reduction Coalition Harm reduction offers evidence based strategies that reduce the risk of dying from an overdose. we aim to support people who use drugs, and the people who love people who use drugs, with information to mitigate the risk of an overdose and to stop an overdose while it’s happening. Overdose prevention centers (opcs), also known as supervised injection sites or safe injection facilities, are another harm reduction approach to preventing overdose. Unodc has been working with member states and partner organizations for over two decades to develop and improve national health responses to non medical use of controlled substances. the response includes evidence based drug prevention programmes, drug treatment and care services and harm reduction interventions. The ten articles in the issue illustrate the impact of having harm reduction in the community and the efforts to mitigate substance use related harms, such as opioid addiction, overdose, harm reduction stigma, naloxone distribution efforts, and recovery.

Overdose Prevention Resources National Harm Reduction Coalition Unodc has been working with member states and partner organizations for over two decades to develop and improve national health responses to non medical use of controlled substances. the response includes evidence based drug prevention programmes, drug treatment and care services and harm reduction interventions. The ten articles in the issue illustrate the impact of having harm reduction in the community and the efforts to mitigate substance use related harms, such as opioid addiction, overdose, harm reduction stigma, naloxone distribution efforts, and recovery. Strategies to reduce risk of overdoses and deaths include avoiding using more than 1 drug at a time, initially using a small amount of a drug (test shot), and having another person present when using drugs. This piece provides an overview of the philosophy of harm reduction, as well as specific strategies for how it can improve safety for people who use substances. Key harm reduction interventions that have gained significant attention during the overdose crisis include medications for opioid use disorder (moud), naloxone, drug checking services, overdose prevention centers, and syringe services programs. Some examples of strategies include overdose education, comprehensive syringe services programs, prescription drug misuse prevention programs and providing access to substance use treatment and recovery services, naloxone and fentanyl detecting test strips.
