Micro, small, and medium enterprises (msmes) play a crucial role as the backbone of indonesia’s economy. recent data from the ministry of cooperatives and msmes shows that in 2023, msmes contributed 61.1% to the gross domestic product (gdp), 97% of national job absorption, and 15.7% to exports. The effect was that indonesia’s economic growth slowed to 4.5% in 2009 from 6.1% in 2008. that growth was the lowest since 2001. however, once again, the msme segment in the country remained able to survive. this is even shown by the growth in the number of msmes during that crisis period. This paper aims to analyze the role of msmes in supporting the indonesian economy and how strengthening the msme sector can have a positive impact on economic growth, job creation, and reducing economic disparities in the country.
