From striking your garden committee to hosting a school wide ‘dig day’, learn how to start a school garden for education, eating, and fun. with more and more gardens popping up across the continent, many parents and teachers are asking themselves what all the fuss is about. Research now points the way for how best to create a school garden that will promote positive outcomes for children ranging from concrete increases in fruit and vegetable consumption and a reduction in childhood obesity to more broadly improving overall mental and physical health.

Dallas county master gardeners provide research based horticultural education and information to a diverse group of learners of all ages. we teach in research, education, and demonstration gardens, community service gardens, and school gardens. This guide will assist you with: starting a new school garden, maintaining an existing school garden; and providing high quality garden based instruction.
