Stamp Mill Gold Mining South Africa Mvsi Company Welcome to goffs town tv taking you on an exciting journey through time as we uncover the rich history of gold mining and working stamp mills. It was the first type that generated electricity, powered by a wood feed steam boiler. steam started the wheels and belts turning; a generator that also was steam driven supplied the electricity for overhead lighting. this was a big plus for a mining company, enabling more production time.

Stamp Mill Gold Mining South Africa Mvsi Company Stamp mill is a mechanical crusher, which is noisy, heavy and somewhat awkward to operate. the stamp mills have been heavy metal weights that are lifted and dropped on the ore by a crankshaft. the crushed gold ore will then be further refined, typically by a mercury or cyanide method. At the waihi mill the ore was dried and partly roasted in kilns, with wood as fuel, and then broken down in rock breakers before being fed to the stamps. the stamps weighed 1,000 lbs. each, and gave 94 blows a minute with a 6½ inch drop. A worker scrapes gold from the copper plates. wagons or dump trucks dump the ore onto a platform and ore bin. the non free gold dumps into cyanide tanks. the free gold spreads out on the copper plates of the amalgamation tables. a jaw crusher breaks down the ore. There are several ways to power a stamp mill. one way is a water wheel. another way is a steam engine. or as we use on our stamp mill, a chain driven electric motor. when the stamp mill is in operation you can hear it a mile away. in the earlier years, the stamp mills ran 24 hours a day.

Just wanted to share a short video with you guys showing how a stamp mill actually operates. this is one of the many pieces of mining equipment you can tour here at the crisson mine. It is positioned at the discharge area of the stamp mill to capture fine gold particles from the crushed ore water slurry. the gold amalgamates (binds) with the mercury and can then be separated and purified. Heavy steel stamps lift and drop repeatedly onto the ore, crushing it into fine sand. the sand, mixed with water, passes through screens as a slurry, exposing valuable metals like gold and silver. at the cossak mill, metals were recovered using mercury amalgamation and later cyanide dissolution. This is a rare working demonstration model of a stamp mill, with moving metal parts. it was designed to crush gold bearing rock into sand to extract the gold. langlands was melbourne’s first foundry and iron shipbuilder, which was in business from 1842 to 1897.
