Opera Review English Touring Opera S Giulio Cesare

Opera Review English Touring Opera S Giulio Cesare Giulio cesare is a tale of passion and revenge, a majestic opera packed with great arias of immense dramatic intensity. handel's celebrated opera follows julius caesar's conquest of egypt and his uneasy alliance and romance with cleopatra, set against the great power struggles of 18th century europe in james conway's acclaimed 2020 production. English touring opera opened its spring season with handel's giulio cesare – not a new production, but in a new guise. typically for baroque opera, the version of the work premiered in 1724 was very long. eto previously took up the challenge by staging it in full over two nights.

Home English Touring Opera English touring opera opened its spring 2023 season with a revival of james conway’s fine 2017 production of handel’s giulio cesare. Our new production is set in period costume during the early 1700s a transformative period for british monarchy as the jacobites aimed to restore a catholic king on england’s throne. Wishing to preserve the grand scale of handel’s operatic masterpiece and not cut any of the music, english touring opera’s new production of giulio cesare (1724) divides it into two parts, which will be given on tour variously on consecutive evenings or on the same day. This staging of one of handel’s finest operas was a musical triumph for english touring opera in partnership with the old street band. lovers of handel’s operas should definitely seek it out.

This opera tells the story of julius caesar and his love for cleopatra. eto chose to set it in 1794, the year handel wrote it. so the warring parties are england and france, not ancient rome. In giulio cesare, the title role itself is problematic. written for a castrato and performed here by counter tenor francis gush, the conquering hero is less interesting than those who surround him. The story of giulio cesare, egypt and cleopatra is well known on stage and screen, and handel’s version, to a libretto by nicolo francesco haym, is by no means the oldest. No sooner than daisy evans and the academy of ancient music gave us a radical new version of purcell's king arthur (see my review), than english touring opera (eto) opened its autumn tour at the hackney empire by performing handel's giulio cesare complete (all four hours of it) split over two nights (4 and 5 october 2017).
