Genomics Icbf

Genomics Icbf Genomics is the study of an animal’s dna or genotype (usually a tissue or hair sample). discovering parentage and improving the accuracy of breeding values and major genes are all possible through our genomic service. Research undertaken by teagasc, and the irish cattle breeding federation (icbf) has highlighted the significant benefits that can accrue to irish farmers and related industries with higher genetic merit herds being more profitable and with a lower carbon footprint.

Genomics Icbf

Genomics Icbf Icbf has built the largest genomic database in the world for beef cattle and the second largest for dairy cattle. over 100,000 farmers, who own almost seven million head of cattle, use this database to optimize the genetic makeup of their herds. What are the future applications of genomics for bovines? the icbf’s goal is to genotype every head of cattle in ireland. with a fully genotyped population, traceability and provenance data will be massively improved, enabling levels of quality control that are unheard of in today’s herds. Genomic results of over 620,000 cows and heifers are set to be published today (friday, january 26) by the irish cattle breeding federation (icbf). these cows and heifers were genotyped during the autumn and winter of 2023 as part of the national genotyping programme (ngp). We are pleased to launch the icbf genomics service for additional dairy breeds. there are now 16 dairy breeds eligible for a genomic evaluation.

Icbf is the largest beef genomics database in the world. that’s ‘billion’ with a ‘b’ (over 218 times the population of china). snps are the most common type of genetic variation between animals. there are over 2 billion pieces of phenotypic (non genomic) data stored on the icbf database. Recently, the irish cattle breeding federation (icbf), a non profit organization charged with providing cattle breeding information services to the irish dairy and beef industries, chose illumina as its technology partner for their beef data and genomics program. Icbf uses performance, ancestry and genomic data from over 15 million beef cattle (the largest beef cattle database in the world). the goal is to identify the superior animals within the breeding program for key traits such as maternal milk, female fertility, cost of calving, cost of feed and carcass growth rate. Herdplus® is icbf’s breeding information service. the genomic service is a fully integrated service that makes use of the icbf database and associated systems. at the moment genomics is only possible for holstein and friesian animals or a combination of both.
