Genomics Explainer Comic Book Contracts The comic book contracts team has co created a visually assisted 'explainer' to improve the comprehension and perception of the documentation given to patients undergoing genomics testing in medical nephrology (from ancient greek νεφρός (nephrós), meaning "kidney"). Drawing on themes identified in interviews with participating families, the team developed a story and comic about a fictional family participating in genomic research in the hopes of finding an explanation for their child’s condition.

Comic contracts represent the contents of the contract with illustrations and other visual means and employ plain language in combination with the illustrations so that the document can be understood by people with low literacy or foreign language skills. Comic contracts are grounded in the insight that contracts are not just legal artifacts but communication tools. by combining plain language with visuals, they improve comprehension, reduce ambiguity, and support real world performance—without sacrificing enforceability. The team have continued their collaboration with aurecon, commencing a further research project in 2019, continuing comic book contracting in aurecon. this project considers how visual contracts might be integrated into aurecon’s construction contracts and their core business. Comic contracts help to clarify and make more tangible complicated terms and clauses, and ensure that both parties fully understand the terms of the agreement. they have been shown to reduce disputes and improve induction times, whilst also empowering vulnerable people.
