Garden Notes Lindy Sinclair Late last night i was hauling buckets of soil up to the top of the mountain. and there was a touch of sciatic ping from the effort. so today i decided that i would shovel all the excess soil onto the front of the bed. yes, burying some ivy, lilac, nameless plants, rocks rubbish. The stalwarts of the rose garden. three happy shrubs growing on the chestnut fence. the munstead wood flowered well this year. it was floundering under the shade of the apple tree on the edge of the potager. and more importantly, was on a mole rat run. it’s roots were suffering. Slopes in dry shade are always tricky places. moisture is at a premium and the huge chestnut tree in this part of the garden is such a thuggish competitor. cistus often lose their leaves in the heat and then come back from the dead. but my two cistus plants here are so large they look like stricken hummocks and draw the eye.
