Rootfull is the business that zena founded in 2018, after she pioneered a new material by growing roots in specially carved templates. rootfull brings together human craft skills with natural processes to fulfil its mission to ‘catalyse change, turn off the plastic tap, and design differently’. Holloway’s collection explores the possibilities and scope of root grown textiles, and how they can be widely utilized in the future. ‘the challenge is to sew, cut, tease, join, pluck, set, and reset until the root has found the optimal form. Nature has been weaving textile under our feet for over 500 million years, creating underground networks or root. the idea took root and grew. five years on and i’ve evolved into a self taught, material innovator and bio designer, crafting and selling products that are grown from root. Rootfull is a creative studio, guiding plant root as it grows to weave unique artefacts and materials. we grow computationally designed materials and complex lattices from grassroots, with unprecedented control over their structural and functional properties. Wheatgrass seed is cultivated in templates carved from beeswax. over 12 days the shoots grow to 20cm while the roots bind below to form a naturally woven structure. the root weaves itself into fabric that is biodegradable, pollution free, water efficient and estimated carbon neutral.
