Welcome to the best movie you never saw, a column dedicated to examining films that have flown under the radar or gained traction throughout the years, earning them a place as a cult. Not only is a showcase for bill paxton's talents as both an actor and a director (and makes you even more sad that he's gone), it has one of the best twists of any horror film i've ever seen. It is a film that inhabits a highly disturbing headspace. it is all the more effective for the understated nature of it – bill paxton refuses to indulge in any cliché horror moves, shows little blood, and concentrates not on the killings but in the battle of faith between father and son.

But we'd rather you see it for yourself. this unique horror film features mcconaughey in his return to the genre after the much maligned texas chainsaw massacre: the next generation. But "frailty" is an excellent entry in the horror genre; a disturbing, unsettling film that raises all sorts of uncomfortable questions with no good answers. it deserves to find a new audience. The film was well received and has achieved a cult status, but frailty – along with other serious adult oriented, genre adjacent dramas such as stir of echoes – never got the accolades it deserves. the film is beloved to its niche audience, but the quality of the production merits a larger audience. hopefully this new release will help with. Why 'frailty' is the best horror movie you (probably) haven't seen for its 20th anniversary, let's take a deep dive into bill paxton's slow burn (and terrifying) feature film directorial debut.
