Memory And Cognition Lab In recent work, we have started exploring how the brain shifts its focus between contents in perception and working memory. controlled laboratory tasks reveal behavioral costs for shifting spatial attention between domains compared to within the external or internal domains. In the aly lab, we explore how the brain’s “memory systems” contribute to attention and perception, and how attention in turn shapes what we perceive, remember, and predict.

Gallery 1 Memory And Cognition Lab Our results break new ground for exploring the ubiquitous act of shifting attention between perception and working memory to guide adaptive behaviour in everyday cognition. A basic challenge for the brain is to parse continuous and dynamic sensory input into discrete and stable percepts, in order to guide cognition and action. we study this interaction of perception, attention, memory, and action within a cognitive neuroscience framework. At the core of the relationship between memory, attention, and perception is the idea that all three processes work together to help us make sense of our environment and store meaningful experiences. Summary: the brain constantly toggles between focusing on external sensory information and internal mental representations like memories, plans, and thoughts. this seamless switching is crucial for adaptive behavior, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood.

Traditionally, emotion was not thought of as a cognitive process, but now much research is being undertaken to examine the cognitive psychology of emotion; research is also focused on one's awareness of one's own strategies and methods of cognition, which is called metacognition. This paper explores memory from a cognitive neuroscience perspective and examines associated neural mechanisms. it examines the different types of memory: working, declarative, and non declarative, and the brain regions involved in each type. Welcome to yale's perception & cognition lab! we're a group of cognitive scientists who explore how we see and how we think, with a special focus on how perception interacts with (and provides a foundation for) other aspects of our mental lives. To this end, we combine methods from computer science, neuroscience and cognitive science to explain and model how perception and cognition are realized in human and machine.
