Sadly, fellini’s casanova isn’t a part of criterion’s essential fellini box set (we recorded it off television, and i decided to include it in this series of posts), most likely due to rights issues. the version i saw was adequate, but the film would deserve a top notch remaster. It seems fellini’s depiction of casanova was to be far more scathing than it finally became. indeed, it is now quite the opposite. while he isn’t exactly an admirable figure, and fellini frequently voiced a dislike of his behavior and his ego, casanova is an unexpectedly tragic one.
