Pop Up Self Portrait Grade 3 Inspired by the lessons of cassie stephens, grade 4 students will create a self portrait in the style of fauvism. This lesson was inspired by the artist frida kahlo, who is well known for her self portrait paintings and often incorporating symbols into her artwork. this lesson took about 4 (40 minute) art classes to complete.

Here are a few examples of fauvist portraits. fauvism is the style of "les fauves," a group of early 20th century modern artists whose works emphasized bold, bright colors not used in usual placement on the subject matter. Students will analyze famous portraits, brainstorm ideas for their self portrait, and over the 3 classes create a colored self portrait while learning to critique themselves and each other constructively. Students will be drawing self portraits in a mirror, then using fauvist theories, and color schemes inspired by fauvist painters to paint their final portrait with acrylic paint.

Grade 3 Self Portraits Trinity Christian School Today we will begin working on our final self portrait. we will be using chalk pastels to represent yourself doing something you particularly enjoy. the first step would be decide what you will be doing in your portrait, such as playing soccer, reading, dancing, playing a musical instrument. During the lesson we looked at several artists’ self portraits, learned about drawing facial features, and how through the use of various tools and techniques, such as varying line quality, students could achieve a likeness of themselves as well as highlight prominent facial features.
