Esa Working Towards Ai And Earth Observation

Esa Working Towards Ai And Earth Observation
Esa Working Towards Ai And Earth Observation

Esa Working Towards Ai And Earth Observation In light of the growing importance of ai, a selected group of scientists and ai experts met recently at esa’s centre of earth observation in italy to share strategies and goals of its benefits. In april 2025, the esa and ibm made the ai model terramind available as open source as part of an initiative to improve access to foundation models in the earth observation community.

Esa Using Ai For Earth Observation
Esa Using Ai For Earth Observation

Esa Using Ai For Earth Observation Over 850 people joined the first international workshop on ai foundation model (fm) for earth observation (eo) co organized by esa and nasa 5 7 may 2025. This report summarises the main outcomes of the 4th edition of the workshop on machine learning (ml) for earth system observation and prediction (esop ml4esop) co organised by the european. More generally, ai tools will increasingly enter the mainstream of esa’s operations and earth observation activities, massively boosting our efforts towards a green and sustainable society by giving us more insightful information for decision making and the essential stewardship of the planet. In this context, and as part of a first element of a wider esa response, Φ lab aims to operate as a catalyst, enabling a network of ai and eo labs across europe to advance our ai4eo knowledge and develop new innovative applications and solutions with eo.

Esa Ai In Earth Observation A Force For Good More generally, ai tools will increasingly enter the mainstream of esa’s operations and earth observation activities, massively boosting our efforts towards a green and sustainable society by giving us more insightful information for decision making and the essential stewardship of the planet. In this context, and as part of a first element of a wider esa response, Φ lab aims to operate as a catalyst, enabling a network of ai and eo labs across europe to advance our ai4eo knowledge and develop new innovative applications and solutions with eo. We have observed rapid technological advances in these fields over the last few years, mainly owing to the increasing use of artificial intelligence (ai) methods – and in particular, techniques from machine learning (ml) in the context of earth observation. Leveraging the european space agency’s missions and funded by esa Φ lab, this initiative combines fresh datasets with innovative ai tools to give the global community better ways to track and respond to our planet’s most urgent environmental shifts. Earth online presents news and information on european space agency activities in the field of earth observation. the website offers information about esa’s earth observation data, and the satellite missions and instruments that acquire this data. Over an almost two‑year fellowship as internal research fellow (july 2022 – june 2024) at esa’s Φ‑lab in frascati, casper fibaek used ai and computer vision to advance earth‑observation analytics, targeting global school‑mapping for unicef‑giga and the development of geospatial foundation models.
