Esa Metop Overview The combination of instruments on board metop has remote sensing capabilities to observe the earth by day and night as well as under cloudy conditions. metop is a series of three satellites, forming the space segment of eumesat's polar system (eps). The mission is developed by esa (european space agency) and eumetsat (european organisation for the exploitation of meteorological satellites), and divided into two different series, metop sg a and b, with complementary sensor payloads that will orbit in pairs.

Esa Metop Overview The first metal 3d printer in space, a collaboration between esa and airbus, has printed its first metal product on the international space station, a breakthrough in crew autonomy for future long duration exploration missions. Ten state of the art instruments will improve weather forecasts and extend climate records. from measuring temperature and water vapour, to imaging fine particles, to detecting wind across the sea surface, the instruments on board metop second generation satellites will collect crucial data. 1) 2) overview of eps the eumetsat polar system (eps) consists of the esa developed metop (meteorological operational) series of spacecraft and an associated ground segment for meteorological and climate monitoring from polar, low earth orbit, providing "morning" service for operational meteorology. The development and procurement of the three metop satellites is a joint undertaking by esa and eumetsat and forms the space segment of eumetsat's polar system (eps). in addition to the space segment, the eps comprises the ground segment, the launch and various infrastructure elements.

With its sophisticated array of instruments and diverse measuring techniques metop can provide outstanding data sets to advance the field of meteorology, which ultimately improve the accuracy of weather forecasting and our understanding of climate change. Metop sga satellites will host atmospheric sounding and imaging instruments that will provide optical, infrared, and microwave observations. the payload will provide critical atmospheric data on cloud, temperature, aerosols, and moisture, as well as a multitude of other critical measurements. Metop sg is a collaborative programme between esa and eumetsat with a total of six satellites being built by airbus defence and space in a cross national team. the program is currently in phase d with launch of the first two satellites scheduled for 2025. Eumetsat’s metop second generation (metop sg) satellites will bring global meteorological observations from a low earth orbit to a new standard from the mid 2020s.
