Elephant Trunk Nebula Alan Short
Elephant Trunk Nebula Alan Short Rising from the bottom of the image, the elephant’s trunk nebula is thought to be a site of star formation, containing several very young (less than 100,000 yr) stars that were discovered in infrared images in 2003. Ic 1396 is a large h ii region with an angular diameter of about 3°, which is home to areas of active star formation, so called globules. the most noticeable globule is the elephant trunk nebula (also often referred to as ic 1396a).
Elephant Trunk Nebula Jared Carpenter Photography The elephants trunk, ic 1396a, is one feature that stands out prominently in images taken of the area. pressure from bright stars in the core blows dust from that area leaving behind a darker region at the center of the nebula while compressing dust around the edges, which drives new star formation. Ic 1396 is a giant emission nebula that is over 3 degrees in diameter. it is illuminated by a hot, massive o type star (hd 206267) near its center. the star is not visible in this image it is off of the top edge. this image is of ic 1396a, a dark, dense cloud of gas embedded in the nebula. The elephant's trunk nebula is an active star forming region where new stars are being born. the nebula contains many young stars and protostars, some aged between 100,000 and 1 million years. The elephant's trunk nebula lies within larger emission nebula called ic 1396. the glowing emission nebula ic 1396 is hot, glowing cloud of gas and dust in space. emission nebulas absorb the light of nearby stars and reach very high temperatures. the high temperature causes them to glow.

A fascinating area of the night sky, the ic1396 complex is a huge emission nebula located in the constellation cepheus. spanning an area wider than six full moons it includes super giant stars, bok globules and a dark nebula referred to as "the elephant trunk". The piece of the nebula shown here is the dark, dense globule ic 1396a; it is commonly called the elephant’s trunk nebula because of its appearance at visible light wavelengths, where there is a dark patch with a bright, sinuous rim. It is estimated that the nebula is around 100 light years across, making it one of the largest star forming regions in the milky way. i captured this over 4 nights, from the utah desert remote observatory, and processed in sho. The photograph below made in narrowband shows only the part of the nebula that features its most prominent element, an elongated dark globule that is being compressed by the surrounding ionized gas — informally dubbed elephant’s trunk and more formally designated as ic 1396a.
