This systematic review seeks to demystify methadone use, provide a better understanding of its pharmacologic benefits, as well as the potential uses for intravenous (iv) methadone as a source of long acting pain relief for surgical patients. The purpose of this narrative review is to summarize the existing studies on the perioperative management of patients who are using buprenorphine and methadone and provide guidance for the management of patients with opioid use disorder during the perioperative period.
