Slated for launch in 2027 and arrival in 2034, dragonfly will sample and examine dozens of promising sites around saturn’s icy moon and advance our search for the building blocks of life. In this series, we dive into the legacy of goddard’s lead role in developing laser altimetry, which has revolutionized the way we map our planet, the moon and other planets. On march 6, 2026, engineers from nasa’s goddard space flight center and blue origin’s honeybee robotics worked with a component of the dragonfly rotorcraft’s sampling and analysis payloads, which include a drill, or drill for acquisition of complex organics (draco), that will collect material and transfer it to the dragonfly mass.

Dr. joanne (joe) hill kittle was appointed as the deputy director for nasa goddard’s engineering and technology directorate (etd) in may of 2021 following a 3 month detail. Nasa’s dragonfly mission team is moving on to the next stage of development on the revolutionary, car sized nuclear powered drone it plans to fly over and land on the organic rich sands of saturn’s large moon titan. These realignments are necessary to align engineering at goddard to respond to a changing aerospace market, the nasa portfolio, and the vision put forward within the president’s budget request for nasa. Set for launch in 2028, the dragonfly rotorcraft is being designed and built at the johns hopkins applied physics laboratory (apl) in laurel, maryland, with contributions from organizations.
