Developmental Language Disorder Harrison Speech Pathology In this episode of the talking dld podcast we’re joined by dr helen stringer and professor yvonne wren to discuss developmental language disorder (dld) and speech sound disorder (ssd), including where they overlap and where they are distinct. ‘developmental language disorder’ was the agreed term for when the language disorder is not associated with a known condition such as autism spectrum disorder, brain injury, genetic conditions such as down’s syndrome and sensorineural hearing loss. Language disorder is characterized by lasting difficulties in language acquisition and use as a result of deficits in the production or understanding of language. speech sound disorder (ssd) is characterized by failure to use speech sounds in a manner appropriate for one’s developmental level. Idiopathic ssds are disorders of the motor production of speech sounds and the linguistic aspects of speech production. these are referred to as articulation and phonological disorders, respectively.

It is important to understand that speech disorders and language disorders are not the same thing. a speech disorder affects the ability to produce sounds correctly, while a language disorder affects the ability to understand, process, or produce meaningful communication. Speech sound disorder: persistent difficulty with speech sound production affecting intelligibility. repetition of sounds, syllables, or words; silent blocks; and associated physical movements. often resolves between ages 3 5 but can become chronic with risk factors like family history. However, in contrast to other diagnostic labels that fall under the overarching term of speech sound disorder (ssd), dld (phonology) does not elucidate the characteristics of the child’s speech nor does it point us in the direction of appropriate intervention. A speech sound disorder is diagnosed when speech sound production is not what would be expected based on the child’s age and developmental stage. a speech language pathologist can test a child’s speech and language and provide treatment if needed.
