Critical Climate Computing
Critical Climate Computing An interdisciplinary collective rethinking digital design and computation through the lens of climate crisis, critical climate computing bridges research, art, and sustainability to imagine low carbon, creative futures. Last year, eva verhoeven and i founded a new research group at university of the arts london called critical climate computing (ccc), formed of fellow artist researchers from across the university.
Critical Carbon Computing Collective This project combines green transition principles with new forms of low compute digital design to produce a proof of concept biomatter powered webserver. This paper has outlined key areas where computing can contribute to climate smart solutions, focusing on the themes of decarbonizing computing infrastructure, enhancing climate resilience, enabling large scale data handling, fostering interdisciplinary approaches, and promoting responsible computing practices. “the work we undertake as a group focuses on carbon and technological literacy around computational systems and their uses, promoting uses of them in arts and design practice that modify, hack, or employ these tools in ways that reduce consumption, minimise waste, and engage with their hidden functionalities to propose mindful and critically reflexive engagements with them. 92 followers, 16 following, 1 posts critical climate computing ual (@critical climate computing) on instagram: "critical climate computing is a group of ual artists exploring new critical and creative horizons for computation and the climate crisis.".
Critical Climate Computing Future Everything “the work we undertake as a group focuses on carbon and technological literacy around computational systems and their uses, promoting uses of them in arts and design practice that modify, hack, or employ these tools in ways that reduce consumption, minimise waste, and engage with their hidden functionalities to propose mindful and critically reflexive engagements with them. 92 followers, 16 following, 1 posts critical climate computing ual (@critical climate computing) on instagram: "critical climate computing is a group of ual artists exploring new critical and creative horizons for computation and the climate crisis.". The goal of the partnership is to increase noaa’s climate modeling capabilities to further critical climate research. to that end, the ncrc has installed a series of increasingly powerful computers since 2010, each of them formally named gaea. In this article, we argue that these methodologies must be augmented with sustainability considerations encompassing energy efficiency, material usage, longevity, and upgradability. solutions at different layers of the system stack, from the physical to the application layer, must be integrated. Six key areas of impact in which these challenges will arise—energy, environmental justice, transportation, infrastructure, agriculture, and environmental monitoring & forecasting—are outlined, and then specific ways in which computing research can help address them are identified. Professor samar khatiwala, from the university of oxford’s department of earth sciences, has led a major advance to solve a critical issue in modelling future climate change. the findings have been published in science advances.
