Designed by brush traction and constructed by british rail engineering ltd at crewe works in 1986, the unique class 89 was the prototype for a planned fleet of locomotives that would take over from the hsts on the electrified ecml and supplement existing motive power on the wcml. Our sample, kindly loaned by rails of sheffield, portrays 89001 in early condition. for the most part, it tallies with my youthful memories of the prototype during its first months in service, seen passing through warrington bank quay with various test trains, before transferri­ng to the east coast route. We received decorated samples of our exciting new class 89 special edition locomotive produced in association with our friends accurascale! these samples arrived a couple of weeks ago and this morning we're revealing the first one, starting with the gorgeous gner livery it wore in the late 1990s.
