Char Saint Chamond Tank The saint chamond tank is featured and playable (under the abbreviation "st chamond") in the 2016 first person shooter video game battlefield 1, by dice and electronic arts. While the number varies from source to source, it stands in official sources that 54 saint chamond tanks were converted to char caissons, essentially transportation for ammunition, spare parts, other supplies, as well as an early form of armored recovery vehicle (arv).

New Type French Tank Camouflaged Photograph Shows A French Saint Developed in parallel with the schneider ca, the saint chamond was the second tank built by the french in 1917. it dwarfed the renault ft and was the most heavily armed allied tank of the war. In the next big tank attack, both schneider ca.1s and st chamonds participated, but the result was again a flop: only the ca.1s managed to pass the german trenches. The saint chamond was the second tank the french introduced to the western front during wwi. by today's standards, it would no longer be considered one. Employing colonel rimailho as the developer, the french army started manufacturing its very own unique model, and by beginning 1916 the original prototype had been constructed at the saint chamond plant at homecourt, from which the fresh tank became commonly called the char d’ assaut st chamond.

The saint chamond tank represented an early attempt by the french military to employ a mobile armoured vehicle during the first world war. although the design had technical shortcomings, it provided valuable experience in the use of mechanised weapon systems. Born of the commercial rivalry existing with the makers of the schneider ca1 tank, the saint chamond was an underpowered and fundamentally inadequate design. its principal weakness was its holt caterpillar tracks. they were much too short in relation to the vehicle's length and weight (23 tons). This particular vehicle at the musée des blindés is the last surviving saint chamond. it had been on display for decades at the now closed u.s. army ordnance museum at aberdeen proving ground (maryland, usa) until it was donated to the french government in 1987. The saint chamond, produced by the army with army specifications, was the most heavily armed and impressive tank of the allies, but proved completely unreliable in the field.
