A collection of twelve (12) pod form sculptures made from various stoneware clays hand collected by the artist in california and minnesota. surfaces vary: some are hand polished to a matte finish, others are wood fired for four or more days to develop a natural ash glaze.

Yohen natural ash glaze tōkaiseki is a technique of matsuzaki’s own invention, these sculptural works are not thrown but hewn, carved and torn from hollowed blocks of clay on a potter’s wheel using a variety of tools – from knives and wooden scrapers to wire, fingers, thumbs and even fistfuls of clay itself. I began working with clay in a workshop at stoneware studios in winnipeg, manitoba. i was immediately drawn to this material which allows endless experimentation. inspired by other artists in this studio, i began studies at the school of art, university of manitoba towards a major in ceramics.
