Umoja Program At Mission College Supporting African American Student Umoja promotes student success and improved lifetime outcomes and improved lifetime outcomes for all students through a curriculum that is responsive to the legacy of the african and african american diasporas. Umoja (a kiswahili word meaning unity) is a learning community dedicated to the academic success, personal growth, and development of self and community of african american students.

What is the umoja community? the organization’s mission statement says “umoja, (a kiswahili word meaning unity) is a community and critical resource dedicated to enhancing the cultural and educational experiences of african american and other students. The umoja community serves at risk, educationally and economically disadvantaged students, believing that when the voices and histories of students are deliberately and intentionally recognized, students develop self efficacy and a foundation for academic success. We take a holistic approach in our efforts to meet the needs of all students. we accomplish our goals through a commitment to our mission, vision, and strategic initiatives. the umoja community education foundation is committed to ensuring that students are our highest priority. Early in the development of the umoja community, a group of faculty created a collection of pedagogical, communication, and cultural practices that represent a shared wisdom in language that resonated with the african american community.
