Long before cars crowded its curves, horse drawn wagons, photographers and church picnickers made boulder canyon a symbol of adventure and a lifeline for mountain towns.

In late 2017, utz quality foods acquired boulder canyon, a colorado based manufacturer of salty snacks. founded in 1994, the brand had been an early entrant in the better for you potato chips category—and, more than 20 years later, was still adopting a design aesthetic better suited to the 1990s. Gold was discovered south of denver, stimulating the pikes peak gold rush. the first anglo european settlers arrived at the mouth of boulder canyon, breaching the borders of arapaho territory as defined by the fort laramie treaty. Our job was to revolutionize the brand identity and create a new packaging design system that would once again win at shelf. with such a rich story based in a family business and the flatiron mountains of boulder canyon, we wanted to bring the brand back to its homegrown roots. The boulder canyon project act authorized construction of a dam in boulder or black canyon, construction of the all american canal to connect the imperial and coachella valleys with the colorado river, and divided the lower basin waters among the lower basin states.
