A Phoenix First Must Burn Edited By Patrice Caldwell Review Review: the back of my copy of “a phoenix first must burn” says that it is anthology that is “beyonce’s ‘lemonade’ meets octavia butler” and i have to say that this is true. all the stories in this anthology are so full of black girl magic and so full of meaning that they just touch the heart. Witches and scientists, sisters and lovers, priestesses and rebels: the heroines of a phoenix first must burn are unforgettable and shine brightly. i don’t know what it is about this pandemic, but i am really ripping through short story anthologies. Meanwhile, caldwell takes a vampire novel fan and teases her with an unexpected attraction at just the right time in her life. in both of these stories the drama is light, showing that there are a lot more ways to write about the fantasy horror standby than have been explored in the past. Keep reading this book review for my full thoughts. sixteen tales by bestselling and award winning authors that explore the black experience through fantasy, science fiction, and magic.

I love it, if the whole anthology had been like it i’d be raving over it. “a hagiography of starlight” is one where it felt complete but i want there to be more, it’s a fantastic world which i want to explore. “melie” inverts several "chosen one" tropes in some cool ways, with an irreverent feeling. A phoenix first must burn is full of super diverse sff elements, black girl magic and lyrical storytelling. this is a book everyone should be reading right now!!! i always find it difficult to review anthologies. as with any anthology, there were definitely some stories i enjoyed more than others. In her introduction, editor caldwell extols the importance of representation and storytelling in black communities and asks “where is my fantasy, my future? why don’t black people exist in speculative worlds?”. Those enamored by the strange fantasy found in robin mckinley and peter dickenson's water should check out the unique fantasies brought to life in this anthology.
