Blown Turbo Subaru Outback Forums I'm diving into my turbo this weekend (hopefully) and am expecting it to be blown. was driving when the whine grew louder and was followed by a noise that sounds similar to the crunch of gravel. some quick research leads me to believe that the turbo was starved of oil thanks to a clogged banjo bolt. This is the 3rd turbo (including one that was on the car when i bought it) that has blown since ive owned it (5months). im at a loss as to why the hell this keeps happening.

I'm pretty active in the various subaru forums and besides oil leaks from early 2.4's, or owners abusing them, they don't seem to have many reported issues. of course you'll have the turbo that could hypothetically at some point go bad that the 2.5 doesn't have. I just wanted to know if my car would loose a considerable amount of power with out the turbo.

Pointless fact of the day: turbo "seals" are actually just snap rings that fit into grooves in the turbine shaft. they don't "blow" or anything like that, it's an incredibly common misconception. Very happy with the turbo engine in the outback, as i maintain that it is one of the most appropriate drivetrain vehicle pairings that i’ve ever experienced. perfect amount of power (both high and low end). Yes that's right, i've gone through 6 turbos in my 2005 outback gt. the car is in great shape and i've toyed with getting rid of it but i just love it and it breaks my heart that subaru could never fix this car right.
