Biodiversity and ecosystems provide us with air, water and food; materials for clothing, medicine and shelter; livelihood; and a host of services that are basic to human survival.

The asean centre for biodiversity (acb) was established in 2005 by the asean member states (ams) as a response to biodiversity loss in the region. the centre supports and coordinates the implementation of activities in the asean leading to the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, for the benefit of the region and the ams. We, the citizens of the asean member states, have the responsibility of keeping the ecosystems of the asean healthy and intact for us, the future generation, and the numerous wildlife species who call this region home. our survival depends on biodiversity. The key outcome is to achieve socially responsible access, equitable sharing, utilization and conservation of natural ecosystems and the biodiversity they contain for the present and future generations of asean member countries (amc). Despite covering only 1.3 per cent of the earth’s surface, indonesia is incredibly rich in biodiversity. the secret to this incredible biodiversity lies in indonesia’s unique location. it straddles two major biogeographical realms: indo malaya and australasia.
