A curious and yet intoxicating mixture of disney tweeness and stiff upper lipped british blitz spirit, “bedknobs and broomsticks” opens with bayeaux tapestry inspired credits which segue into a “dad’s army” esque opening number, immediately bringing a much darker tone than the quirky cobbled streets of edwardian london that poppins. Brilliant family entertainment! set during wwii, bedknobs and broomsticks is a fun filled fantasy adventure for kids, starring angela lansbury as an apprentice witch who, with the help of three evacuee children and a 'professor of witchcraft', thwarts a nazi invasion. Both films also feature a highly romanticised version of the british class system, including people with wildly exaggerated cockney accents who break into dance in the streets at a moment’s notice. Nothing else seems to be working, but bedknobs and broomsticks is still on the shelf, and it was already intended to be similar to mary poppins, so it’s a perfect excuse to put all the same people on it and hope it repeats the success.
