Bacteria Become Art Tools In Annual Agar Art Competition Decades later, the american society of microbiology launched its annual agar art contest which launched agar art to the international spotlight. it has expanded to over 30 countries, with various themed competitions for professionals, amateurs and anyone interested in microbial art. The microbes used can be bacteria, yeast, fungi, or less commonly, protists. the microbes can be chosen for their natural colours or engineered to express fluorescent proteins and viewed under ultraviolet light to make them fluoresce in colour. Every year different microbiological communities organize agar art competitions with different themes. for example, the american society of microbiology (asm) is organizing an asm agar art competition in 2023 with the theme of microbiology in space. This year’s theme is “microbes make the world go round.” we invite participants to showcase the value of science and the vital role microbes play in our daily lives through the medium of agar. submissions will be accepted sept. 12 oct. 26, and all are welcome to apply! visit our website for contest details: https: asm.social 2zo#agarart.

The institute of microbiology of the academy of sciences of the republic of uzbekistan invites you to try your hand as a microbial artist! even if you’ve never held a petri dish — we’ll teach you. Since 2015, asm's agar art contest has provided a platform for scientists and artists to showcase their creativity by using live microbes to "paint" images on agar a gelatin like medium used to grow microorganisms. Inspired by wilson’s concept of consilience (1), we found ourselves considering ways to include personal experimental design in a portable and inclusive cure around the same time that agar art, or painting using pigmented bacteria, was rising in popularity online and elsewhere. Participants from the byu community used multicolored bacteria to create masterpieces at the department of microbiology and molecular biology’s (mmbio) agar art competition on tuesday, october 10.
