On the way to conduct a workshop in anchorage, i took the ferry through the inside passage in 2018. prior to departing, i knew i had to make a map of the area, as an exercise in starting to understand (from a top down perspective, at least), the landscape i would be moving through.

So i turned to the style of urban transit maps pioneered by harry beck in the 1930s for the london underground. straight lines, 45° angles, simple geometry. the result is more of an abstract network representation than you would find on most maps, but it’s also a lot more fun. the geography is intentionally distorted to clarify relationships. It’s simply a map of some places that have been, at one time or another, my home. there are actually four maps in the spread, of different places and at different scales. they blend together, though, as memories do.
