Arctic Sea Ice Maximum 2025
The 2025 Maximum Arctic Sea Ice Extent Arctic Watch Arctic sea ice extent appears to have reached its annual maximum on march 22, 2025. this is the lowest maximum in the 47 year satellite record, with previous low maximums occurring in 2017, 2018, 2016, and 2015. Analyses for the 2025 2026 winter season indicated a maximum 3 day average sea ice extent of 14.53 million square kilometers between 6 march and 8 march. usnic maximum ice extent is determined based on a 3 day average to account for short term spatial variability in the sea ice edge location.
Arctic Sea Ice 2025 Maximum By Rick Thoman At the end of summer 2025, the ice cover was younger, thinner and 28% less extensive than in 2005. the profound changes in sea ice since 2005 are opening the arctic to more human activity and bringing to the fore concerns about safety, security, and the environment. After growing through the fall and winter, sea ice in the arctic appears to have reached its annual maximum extent. the image above shows the ice extent—defined as the total area in which the ice concentration is at least 15 percent—at its 2025 maximum, which occurred on march 22. The national snow and ice data center reports that arctic sea ice appears to have reached its seasonal maximum extent on march 22, 2025, 10 days later than the 1981 2010 average. despite the late peak, it was the lowest maximum extent of the 47 year satellite era, which began in 1979. Looking back at 2025, the arctic sea ice extent (3) marked the lowest yearly maximum extent (13.79 million square kilometers) (4) on 20 march in the satellite observations record, and afterward continuously decreased to a lower extent.
