Amsteldok Chris Page Located along the banks of the amstel river stands the 19,000 sq m building, now named amsteldok, which dates from 1973. designed by architect hugh maaskant, at the time is was europe’s largest office building. The refurbishment of the previously derelict and unloved 1970’s rivierstaete building has been transformed into a 20,000 sq m next generation workspace with a range of co working, conference, and hospitality spaces designed as a destination for creativity in amsterdam. Superunion was asked to develop a name, brand identity, attitude and tone of voice for the new amsterdam campus. amsteldok is a living entity, breathing creativity and collaboration. 1970s landmark amsteldok formerly known as rivierstaete dates from 1973. a modernist colossus, it quickly became known locally as ‘the monkey house’ (de apenrots), because of its piled up, closed volumes. designed by architect hugh maaskant, at the time it was europe’s largest office building.

Amsteldok, the wpp headquarters in amsterdam, brings together 19 wpp agencies in a revitalised space. formerly known as the rivierstaete building, it has been transformed into a modern working environment spanning 19,000m2. Since 2010, he has been designing, writing, teaching and lecturing about typefaces. he started at fontsmith in 2017, and joined the monotype studio team in 2020. Amsteldok, wpp’s latest campus for creativity and collaboration, has been shortlisted for a world festival of interiors inside 2019 award in the completed offices category. Amsteldok, which was europe’s largest office building when it was completed in 1973 by renowned architect huig aart maaskant, will be home to 15 wpp agency brands that previously operated from 11 different locations.
