The alpine convention is an international territorial treaty for the sustainable development of the alps. the objective of the treaty is to protect the natural environment of the alps while promoting its development.
Alpine Convention Home The convention encompasses all of the states through which the alps run: austria, france, germany, italy, liechtenstein, monaco, slovenia and switzerland. the alpine convention itself covers an area comprising 43 regions, 5,800 local authorities, and a population of around 13 million. For this reason, the eight alpine countries and the european union established the alpine convention to tackle these challenges together. work is being carried out on various fronts in austria to implement the alpine convention. The topic of biodiversity will certainly remain central under the italian guidance of the alpine convention, and a project proposal for an alpine wide biodiversity monitoring programme has in fact already been submitted, which will be coordinated by eurac research. The alpine convention works across administrative levels, fostering cooperation among alpine countries, regions, and local communities. the convention supports cooperation across sectors through a large network of partners and organisations. Treatment of wastes adapted to the specific topographic, geologic, and climatic needs of the alpine region, while at the same time aiming at the reduction in volume of wastes produced. 3. the contracting parties shall agree to protocols establishing the means of application of the present convention. The publications of the alpine convention are the result of an intensive process of data collection. they are available in english and mostly in the four alpine languages and present the information in a user friendly and meaningful way.
