The alaska mariculture cluster was chosen due to alaska’s existing mariculture labor force, abundant coastline for growing shellfish and seaweed, and unique focus on indigenous and rural representation. Alaska’s coastal waters are home to something remarkable—a growing network of ocean farms shaping the future of sustainable ocean products. in our pristine, cold waters, dedicated growers are cultivating kelp, oysters, and other shellfish that capture the pure essence of alaska’s wild waters.

Southeast conference (sec) is the lead entity administering the alaska mariculture cluster. since its founding in 1958, sec has been a driving force in regional economic and community development in southeast alaska. Alaska’s abundant coastlines and existing labor force are well positioned to meet international and domestic interest in the sustainable mariculture sector, and the coalition is activating these assets through a series of complementary projects across the region’s entire value chain. The alaska mariculture cluster, which has been awarded a $49 million grant from the eda’s build back better regional challenge, is a key partner in this effort. managed by sec and supported by the alaskan mariculture alliance, the cluster is focused on highlighting and developing the local industry.
