For those working, teaching, studying, and researching in the department, a formally sanctioned concentration on aerospace came as no surprise. mae has helped to develop and support faculty from the aerospace industry for decades, including researchers from nasa, spacex, and the us air force. The national science foundation (nsf) ranks mechanical and aerospace engineering in research expenditures at michigan tech 18th in fy2020 (latest rankings) with $20.255 million among all mechanical engineering programs in the u.s.
