Acts 11 30 This They Did Sending Their Gifts To The Elders With The disciples were called christians first at antioch. 27 during this time some prophets came down from jerusalem to antioch. 28 one of them, named agabus, stood up and through the spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire roman world. (this was fulfilled during the reign of claudius.) 29 so the believers in antioch decided to send relief to the brothers and sisters in judea, everyone giving as much as they could. 30 this they did, entrusting their gifts to barnabas and saul to take to the elders of the church in jerusalem. A party of jews who professed to be christians insisted that a person had to be circumcised and follow the law of moses to be saved. the jerusalem council (acts 15) had to work through this important issue, and paul wrote galatians to refute this serious error. This is as most scholars attest the first gentile christian church. this church was not formed by a vision of the lord nor was it formed through a pouring out of the holy spirit to the degree that that happened at pentecost but this church was born in the midst of persecution.

These lessons from acts 11 remind us of the dynamic and transformative work of god in the early church, encouraging us to live out our faith with boldness and love. “and when peter was come up to jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him, saying, thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them” (acts 11:2 3). The passage in acts 11:19 21 describes the spread of christianity to gentiles in antioch. this section is significant as it marks a pivotal moment in the early christian church where the message of jesus christ was being received beyond the confines of judaism.
