Saint Camillus Of Lellis July 18 Viva Cristo Rey The feast of st. camillus de lellis is celebrated on july 18th. this date commemorates his death and his entrance into eternal life, where he continues to intercede for all healthcare workers and the sick. On july 18 the u.s. catholic church celebrates the feast day of saint camillus de lellis, who turned from his life as a soldier and gambler to become the founder of an order dedicated to caring for the sick. Saint camillus, you knew the rough life of the soldier, gambler, and wanderer. because of your experiences, you practiced great empathy for the outcast, the sick, and the dying. help us to be like you, to translate our empathy into action, and to be motivated primarily by love of god. Saint camillus de lellis was rejected by the capuchins because of an ongoing medical condition. against the advice of a friend, he founded a religious community on his own to care for the sick. these men proved to be invaluable during the plague, caring for the worst of its victims. After giving his last instructions to his fellow ministers of the sick, st. camillus de lellis died on july 14, 1614. he was canonized by benedict xiv in 1746, and later named – along with saint john of god – as one of the two main co patrons of nurses and nursing associations in 1930. St. camillus invites us to see christ in the suffering, to serve with both skill and tender compassion. his life reminds us that true sanctity often shines brightest in humble service to others.
